With Maxa being a world premiere, I had the unique challenge of lighting a world that had never been created before. Taking inspiration from the original Grand Guignol, we sought to make a world of gothic horror. This show takes place mostly in Paula’s mind, a place of darkness and shadows. By using intense colors and angles, I attempted to create as many interesting shadows both on the characters’ bodies as well as on the set around them. I also achieved this by keeping intensity levels as low as possible (while still keeping the actors lit of course).
